Noise Pollution

Environment means the soil, water, and air around us. The World Environment Day is observed on 5th June every year. We talk a lot about protecting our environment. But in practice, We damage it. Man exploits his environment to satisfy his greed. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed.” But we have thrown these wise words to the winds. ‘No bird fouls

its nest’, goes a proverb. Man has plundered this planet for long, and now the planet is taking revenge. A breakdown has occurred. The environment has been highly polluted. Now a question arises as to what is environmental pollution. Environmental pollution is the introduction of contaminants to the environment. It causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the physical systems. This pollution is broadly of four types – soil pollution, water pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution.

Noise is a disagreeable sound. It is disagreeable because it disturbs in various ways. It increases fatigue and decreases efficiency. Noise pollution is the presence of unwanted loud sound in the environment. Industries and vehicles are the two main sources of noise pollution. Vehicular movements aggravate it. The non-industrial sources include street noise and sound from household gadgets. The use of loudspeakers after a certain permissible limit aggravates sound pollution. Public demonstrations contribute to noise pollution as well. Loudly played sound systems, televisions, and bursting of crackers that produce deafening noise are some of the major sources of sound pollution.

Noise pollution creates problems for all. Noise affects the nerves and heart, disturbs sleep. Sudden loud noise can cause acute damage to the ear-drum in the internal ear. A man exposed to prolonged noise pollution may suffer from loss of hearing. Noise pollution causes psychological changes. Blood pressure increases. Health problems like giddiness, nausea, and insomnia become frequent. Sharp muscular contractions take place. It may lead to congenital defects in unborn children. Noise results in low concentration and poor attention among students.

The law courts across our country are active crusaders in controlling noise pollution. That is why, noise-free equipment, rubberized material, anti vibration pads are now used in running machines. Restrictions have been imposed to lessen pollution construction work. Unnecessary honking of horns is banned. But the government has many miles to go before it can curb noise pollution. Noise free zones should be ensured around residential areas, educational institutions, and health centers. Development of green belts in vast metropolises and industrial towns should be the answer to noise pollution. Side by side, a mass effort in this regard is also required. There should be a combined effort to trigger off an environmental awareness campaign. An awareness about the environment today can make all the difference tomorrow.
