Hobby is an activity done regularly in our leisure time for pleasure. Some people like painting, photography, stamp collecting, fishing, story writing etc. in their leisure. I love to paint. It is my hobby. I paint with watercolor. I like to paint beautiful landscapes. When we go to different places like hill stations, dessert areas, river banks or the countryside, I always take my art materials with me. I like to sit and paint a
scenery as I watch it. The painting is then very vivid and comes alive. I find my hobby refreshing to me. I keep all my paintings carefully. I have participated in different art exhibitions and painting competitions and won prizes too. When I am lonely and bored, my canvas and paper, tubes and bottles of colour and brushes give me wonderful company in a beautiful and colourful way.
Paragraph on ‘My Hobby’ (Gardening)
Paragraph on My Hobby Gardening |
A hobby is a pleasure-giving or interesting pursuit which we follow during our leisure hours. It differs from person to person. Some people like painting, photography, stamp-collecting, fishing, gardening etc. in their leisure. My hobby is, however, gardening. Though it needs constant labour and care, it is the purest of human pleasures and satisfactions. Every afternoon, as I come from school I go to my garden and work there for some time. There I turn the earth up with a spade, pull out the grass, make the soil fit with manure and plant flower-plants. I also water them regularly in the evening. When the plants burst into flowers, their fragrance spreads all around. I find great pleasure when the multi-coloured butterflies visit my garden and the masses of beautiful and colourful flowers flutter in the breeze. This spectacle purifies my soul and keeps me away from the maddening crowd of cities. It gives me enough of physical exercise to keep my body fit and fine. It provides diversion from boredom and refreshes the mind after tiring physical or mental work. My parents, friends and neighbours praise me for it. Every morning my grandmother plucks flowers and blesses me. Her blessing fills me with immense joy and encourages me in my work.
My Hobby (Stamp Collection)
Paragraph on My Hobby (Stamp Collection) |
A hobby is a work which is done during our leisure to have pleasure instead of monotonous machine work. I am very much fond of collecting stamps and that is my hobby. On the occasion of my 11th birthday celebration one of my friends presented me with a nice stamp-album. That stamp-album inspired me to collect stamps. My album is my treasure. It is a world-miniature full of pictures of different nations. My treasure possesses the stamps of different countries such as – USA, Russia, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Holland, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Japan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China etc. I have got some rare collections bearing the commemoration of Leonardo Da Vinchi, George Washington, Lenin, Rabindranath, Gandhi, the Olympic, the Asian Games and so on. Some stamps are very colourful and bear the pictures of birds, beasts, mountains, the Niagara Falls, the Tajmahal, the Ajanta caves etc. My parents fund me. It took me long years to collect all these stamps. First, I have collected a few easily available stamps, then with the help of my father’s friends and other relatives I have collected a treasure, the envy of my friends.
My Hobby (Reading novels)
The word ‘hobby’ is derived from ‘hobby horse’. It is a small wooden horse for small children to ride on it for their amusement. So hobby is a work in which one indulges in spare time. Hobby offers no monetary benefit. But one derives pleasure from it.
Everybody gets tired of the monotony of daily life. They need relaxation. They need an enjoyable world of their own. For this, they must develop a hobby. It is an escape from the fever and fret of life. There are many hobbies like gardening, philately, numismatics, reading, etc. One adopts a hobby according to one’s taste.
My favourite hobby is reading novels. A novel presents a pen-picture of life, society or the characters around us. This picture may be drawn from real life or from imagination. But this picture is seen through the prism of the writer’s mind.
Novels may be divided into various genres – social, religious, historical, or detective. Sarat Chandra’s Palli Samaj is a social novel, whereas Pather Dabi is a political one. Bankim Chatterjee’s Raj Singha is a historical novel. Mrs. Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin speaks of the evils of slavery. Sir Walter Scott’s novels illuminate many characters of history. Satyajit Ray’s Feluda Series belongs to the genre of detective novels.
Novels have an educative value. They make us think. They give us an insight into the habits and customs, likes and dislikes, passions and prejudices of other people. Thus, they widen our intellectual horizon. The novels of Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, etc. are the jewels of Bengali literature. The novels of Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy are the jewels of English literature.
Whenever I find time, I pick up a novel of my choice. Novels, I think, are the sources of joy and knowledge. They feed a hungry mind. “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.” Thus, the writer Bacon classifies books. Therefore, choice of books is important. I am fond of classics. I believe they are the nurslings of immortality. They have stood the test of time. In a Word, my hobby of reading novels is a kind of enjoyment for me.
My Hobby (Photography)

Hobby is an activity done regularly in our leisure time for pleasure. Different people have different hobbies. Some people like painting, photography, stamp collecting, fishing, story writing etc. in their leisure. I enjoy photography. I take shots of those things that are lovely and wonderful. Everybody praises me for shots of a butterfly on a rose or the playing kittens. I also take interest in capturing life’s happy moments. We relieve them as years go by. My mother may become impatient to smile for the camera. My restless brother may not like to sit for a shot. Days will silently slip away. Their photos will go into albums. We don’t know how much joy these photos will give us in future. Photography is a great source of joy. It’s both interesting and useful. It develops a taste of beauty. It increases accuracy. It tries to make some moments permanent in a temporary world. The photo of my father on the sea shore may be a work of art. But my satisfaction is elsewhere. I’ve captured time that waits for none.
