August 23, 2023, will be marked as a day of historical significance for India and space exploration. India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission landed on the moon at 6:04 pm, making India the fourth country after the United States, Soviet Union and China to successfully touch the lunar surface with a robotic craft.

The flawless soft landing made Chandrayaan-3 the first spacecraft to touch the South Pole region of the Moon. The achievement came close on the heels of Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft losing control and subsequently crashing into the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-3 is India’s most ambitious lunar mission, following in the footsteps of its predecessors Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2. Chandrayaan-3 was launched on July 14, 2023 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Crowds gathered at the space centre to witness the history-making launch.

The lunar mission has been designed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Chandrayaan-3 aims to build on the progress and experience gained from its predecessor. It has an orbiter, a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyan. All three components have been designed to work in synergy to conduct lunar research. The lander and rover components have been improved to meet the challenges faced during the landing phase of Chandrayaan-2. Correcting the problems faced by Chandrayaan-2, ISRO this time managed to ensure a soft and precise landing.

Primary objective of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission is to further explore the lunar surface, particularly the south polar region. The rover Pragyan also collects important scientific data, and improves our understanding of lunar geology, mineralogy, and topography. Chandrayaan-3’s scientific objectives include analyzing water ice deposits, measuring the lunar atmosphere, mapping the lunar surface, and conducting experiments to gain insight into the moon’s origin and evolution.

This ambitious lunar mission not only strengthens India’s position as a key player in the global space community but also has the potential to significantly contribute to humanity’s knowledge of our celestial neighbour, the Moon. With the success of Chandrayaan-3, ISRO will mark another significant milestone in India’s space exploration journey. Along with the hard work of the scientists, the prayers of about 140 crore people also worked behind the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3.
