Coromandel Express derailed, nearly 291 died
Bhubaneswar, June 3: The disastrous triple train crash in Balasore, Odisha, has left 291 casualties and more than 900 injured. The tragic accident happened on June 2 at around 7 pm after a passenger train, the Coromandel Express, heading to Chennai, reportedly hit a goods train, after which many coaches flipped over. A few coaches of Coromandel Express toppled over the last few coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express which was passing by at the same time. Both trains were moving at a high speed when the collisions happened.
Preliminary investigations in the train crash in Odisha’s Balasore district have revealed that a signal was given to Coromandel Express to enter the main line. But it was taken off and the train entered the loop line and crashed into a goods train parked there.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of the accident. He also met injured people receiving treatment in hospital wards and vowed that those responsible would be punished.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that he has ordered a high-level probe into the derailment. “The accident was unfortunate, and the rescue operation began shortly after the incident was reported to his ministry,” the minister said. The NDRF team started a rescue operation. The railway ministry has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs. 2 lakh to those severely injured, and Rs. 50,000 to those who sustained with minor injuries.
