The moon is the queen of night. It is seen after sunset. During the day, the light of the sun hides the moon. So it can be seen in the sky only at night. The moon that brightens like a silver disc in the sky, is a very familiar figure to all of us. It is over two lakhs miles away from the earth. It is the only satellite of the planet earth. It moves round the earth. The moon has no light of its own. The soft, silvery brightness of the moon is borrowed solely from the light of the sun. There are dark spots on the moon. They are nothing but caves where the sunlight cannot get into. Sometimes we see the moon quite round and then it shines brightly on the earth. We call it the full moon. Next it becomes smaller and smaller and lastly we do not see it at all. The moon attracts the earth. Due to the attraction, the tide and ebb occur in the earth. There is no air on the moon. In 1969 man landed on the moon and created history. The moon light is mellow, cool, soft and pleasant. A walk on a moonlit night is very charming. The moon is very favourite to poets, women and children.

The moon that brightens like a silver disc in the sky, is a very familiar figure to all of us. She awakens a feeling of love and tenderness in our hearts, which the sterner sun can hardly do. Even an infant in arms stretches out its hands to grasp this beautiful thing. Ever since the dawn of the poetic faculty in man, she has been a subject for poets and artists. The full moon and crescent moon have played in the past, and are still playing, an important part in art and literature.
But science has a different tale to tell about the moon. It reveals to us that the moon has no light of her own. That soft, silvery brightness which forms her main charm to us is borrowed solely from the light of the sun. Out of the vast flood of light which the sun pours forth, the moon grasps a little, and of this little she reflects a small fraction to light the earth. When, on a clear night, we look out on the magic of moon-light, it is often difficult for us to realise that the moon is shining in borrowed feathers. A very simple observation will, however, suffice to show the truth of this. If we look at the pale moon at day-break, she will seem like a wan shadow, a ghost of her former self, as pale as the clouds that enclose her. We will then understand her real poverty, and that she has to depend for her measure of light on the charity of her richer relation of the day.
Many of the secrets concerning the moon have been revealed to us by the telescope. It rudely dispels our fond illusion that the moon is a land of beauty and enchantment, and shows her up to us in her real colours. Instead of being the paradise of our dreams, she is, in reality, a waste desert. But whatever the findings of the scientists, the moon has an incomparable and irresistible charm for me.
