Amphan Ravages West Bengal

Kolkata, May 21, 2020 : Cyclone Amphan claimed at least 106 lives leaving a trail of destruction in West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh. Cyclone Amphan made its landfall in West Bengal with a wind speed of 185 kmph at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. The cyclone ravaged Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal. It left behind a trail of destruction by uprooting trees, destroying thousands of homes and swamping low-lying areas
of the state. River embankments were broken in South and North 24 Parganas flooding several areas.

Strong winds with speed up to 125 kmph upturned cars in Kolkata and felled trees and electricity poles blocking many roads. Streets and homes in low-lying areas of Kolkata were swamped with rainwater. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “The impact of Amphan is worse than Coronavirus”. Cyclone Amphan has claimed 86 lives in West Bengal. It caused havoc in at least 14 districts, mainly in South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts. Most of the casualties were due to electrocution, falling trees and collapsing structures. According to the West Bengal government, millions of people were affected by the cyclone. Apart from human and livestock casualties, the cyclone caused severe losses to farmers by destroying their crops.The city airport was flooded in rainwater. NDRF (National Disaster Relief Force) teams were deployed in cyclone-affected areas of West Bengal for rescue operations.
